1. Pumpkin

I think it’s safe to say that fall is synonymous with pumpkins. Better yet, fall marks the annual return of pumpkin pies, pumpkin spice, and all things pumpkin-flavored. This food trend may seem one-note and overused; however, pumpkin has a lot to offer with its surprising versatility. The sweet, earthy taste lends itself especially well to baked goods. If you’re in the mood for savory instead, just add some heavy cream and parmesan cheese to pumpkin puree for a decadent, filling soup.

2. Apple

This vegetable is notorious for its bitterness, but when cooked correctly, brussels sprouts have a tender texture that’s addicting to say the least. Plus, roasting them crisps up the outer leaves for an even more satisfying bite. Brussels sprouts are at their peak freshness during the fall, so take advantage of this and try them out for yourself.

Balsamic-roasted brussels sprouts are one of my dinnertime go-tos, no matter the season. To switch it up, swap the balsamic vinegar for minced garlic, parsley, and oregano.

Aside from these four trends, there are countless other ways to celebrate the season. A good rule of thumb is to make the most of autumn’s bountiful harvest. Pears, sweet potatoes, pomegranates, and zucchini are just some of the many fruits and vegetables that ripen in the fall. Add these and other seasonal produce to your shopping list to enjoy fresh, nutritious meals throughout the colder months.
