Tavern in the Square started with a group of friends, all with strikingly different backgrounds, but one love that tied them together: food. They endeavored to Boston to open up a restaurant with a fun and friendly vibe for people to watch a good sports game, catch up with some friends, or to simply enjoy some high quality meals. Then, Tavern in the Square was born. With locations scattered around the Boston area, there are plenty of opportunities to brunch at this scrumptious Bostonian chain! Myself and four other members from Spoon University Northeastern decided to head to brunch at Tavern Allston for a meal that we sure did love a BRUNCH!

Coffee and Donuts

Our brunch started off with a delicious wake-up call. To drink, I had the "Coffee and Donuts," which was made with Jameson, Bailey’s, cold brew, house simple syrup, milk, and topped with a skewer of donut holes. This drink sure woke me up and I was beyond ready to tackle the rest of the meal. This was definitely an upgrade from those 8am runs to Dunkin' Donuts, especially minus the line. A skewer of donut holes AND coffee in one? Now that’s my kind of combo.

Crispy Pork Belly & Avocado Egg Rolls

To me, pork belly is simply one of the best proteins out there. Whether it’s found in ramen noodles, bao buns, or in this delicious combination of avocado and chipotle sour cream. So, I could not resist trying the pork belly and avocado egg rolls as my first appetizer. It’s a twist on a classic fried favorite!

Southern Fried Benedict

I had quite a hankering for this Southern fried chicken eggs benedict! The classic eggs benedict itself is usually never a disappointment for brunch (or any meal really), but with fried chicken, biscuit, crispy bacon, and cracked pepper gravy to top it off, there was definitely a lot more to enjoy than just the beautiful, oozing yolk. The combination of all these ingredients was definitely an egg-cellent way to start off my morning - no yo(l)ke!

Morning Pie

Though skeptical at first, the hemp crust was an interesting, yet scrumptious choice as a thin and crispy dough choice. This pie was an integration of all my favorite breakfast ingredients: tomatoes, scrambled eggs, mozzarella, provolone, and crispy bacon -- all placed on top of this delicious hemp crust! As a firm believer of food tasting better when shared among friends, this morning pie (or breakfast pizza?) definitely captured a pizza of my heart!

Glow Bowl

Even the health conscious can find something for themselves at Tavern Allston! I could definitely see why this amazing gluten free AND vegan bowl was named the Glow Bowl - the arrangement of bright ingredients consisting of poached eggs, sweet corn, edamame, avocado, cotija, and quinoa definitely woke me up from my previous long week of classes and all-nighters pulled.

Cinnamon Roll Waffles

To satisfy my sweet tooth, the cinnamon roll waffles were a must. I mean, it is the combination of two of the best breakfast foods (cinnamon rolls and waffles), am I right?! Sometimes, I have trouble choosing between which to eat (#struggles) but this dish allowed me to enjoy both of them at one sitting! These crunchy, cinnamon waffles drizzled with maple cream cheese frosting and served with a side of maple syrup sure tasted waffl-y amazing!

Churro Pancakes

For the most drool-worthy, Insta-worthy dish, I simply could not resist the churro pancakes. Again, Tavern never seems to disappoint with combining two strikingly different dessert foods into one beautiful and delicious combination. Topped with Mexican chocolate sauce, cinnamon sugar churros, and strawberries, these fluffy pancakes were by far the crowd favorite! The first bite was so fluffy and soft that I felt like I was biting into a cloud (of sweetness), and I was basically in heaven as I slowly devoured every bite of those pancakes.

With not a single bite left on any of the dishes, Tavern definitely got me hooked onto their brunch menu, and it served as the perfect remedy for a long, energy-draining week. The friendly and welcoming restaurant environment, the lovely company, and of course, the absolutely mouthwatering brunch dishes, certainly brightened up my Saturday morning. On behalf of Spoon Northeastern, I would like to thank “Tavern in the Square” for letting me taste their incredibly appetizing brunch menu and for their ever so welcoming service. Seriously considering trying everything on the menu before graduation!
