Just a couple weeks ago, I reached the absolute peak of food boredom. I had been eating the same few meals over and over again practically every day for weeks, and I couldn't handle it anymore! The issue was, I still had a refrigerator full of those same grocery items. I knew I had to keep eating my usual foods because I didn't want to wasteful, and I certainly couldn't afford to be either. Suddenly, I realized that instead of continuing to eat the same meals that had bored me, I could try a totally new recipe with the same ingredients! I could create a new fun and exciting meal that would make my meals delicious and enjoyable again! That's when I scrolled through a colorfully aesthetic Pinterest feed of smoothie bowls and the idea came to me: a 5-minute rainbow smoothie bowl!

Making the Recipe

Within minutes, I got to work developing the recipe. As a major fruit lover, I knew that I was definitely going to pack this rainbow smoothie bowl full of delicious and colorful fruits. Knowing that fruits are high in carbohydrates, I made sure to also add some protein powder to the recipe to balance out the nutrients in this bowl, making it an even more healthy and nutritious meal.

Finally, I determined the rainbow smoothie bowl toppings. To make a fruit rainbow on top of the smoothie bowl, I took inspiration from the colors of real rainbows. This meant I would need fruits that were red, orange, yellow, green, blue, and/or purple. As I also know that I have no patience for cooking for hours in the kitchen, I made sure this rainbow smoothie bowl could be made in 5 minutes or less. After I had the recipe all ready to go, I put it to the test as seen in the video above. And because, spoiler alert, it went very well, I had to share the recipe with you so that you can make yourself this delicious 5-minute smoothie bowl too! See the recipe below.

  • Step 1

In a blender blend: frozen bananas, splash of water or almond milk, protein powder, and the colorful fruit or veggie of your choice. Adjust thickness of smoothie by adding more or less water or almond milk. (The more liquid you add, the more liquidy your smoothie will be. A thicker smoothie is best so that the toppings stay still on top.)

  • Step 2

Pour your smoothie base into your bowl and prepare your rainbow fruit toppings by cleaning and cutting them. (You will need a RED, ORANGE/YELLOW, GREEN, and a PURPLE/BLUE colored fruit.)

  • Step 3

Now, starting with your RED fruit, create the largest, outer arch of your rainbow by gently placing your fruit in a half-circle pattern on top of your smoothie base.

Continue adding arches of the rainbow within the outer arch in the pattern of: RED, ORANGE/YELLOW, GREEN, then PURPLE/BLUE.

Finally, you can also add some unsweetened coconut flakes to the bottom ends of your fruit rainbow to simulate clouds at the bottom of a rainbow. And that's it! Take a picture of your beautiful creation and enjoy!

Other Colorful Fruit Ideas

RED: For the red arch of the rainbow on top of the 5-minute rainbow smoothie bowl, I used strawberries. But you could also try other red/reddish fruits like watermelon, red cherries, red apples, grapefruit, or raspberries. Just make sure that, when placing your fruit down into your bowl, you make sure only the red part of the fruit is visible when looking down at your bowl. This can be said for all the fruit colors.

ORANGE/YELLOW: For the orange/yellow arch of the rainbow, I used mango slices. But some other orange/yellow fruits you can consider trying are oranges, tangerines, papaya, persimmons, apricots, nectarines, pineapple, peaches, and banana.

GREEN: Some green fruits you can use for the green arch of your rainbow include honeydew melon, green grapes, green apples, and avocado. I used green grapes sliced in half and it looked great.

BLUE/PURPLE: For the last and smallest arch of the rainbow, or the blue/purple arch, I used blueberries.  But you could also use fruits like purple grapes, blackberries, black currants, plums, or raisins.
