Breakfast is the best meal and ice cream is the best dessert, and we are so glad there's a holiday that combines the two! National Ice Cream for Breakfast Day is an annual holiday that is held on the first Saturday of February. These annual food holidays are the perfect excuse for restaurants and food vendors to hold special events and bring in customers. Here are a few places that celebrated this holiday in the best way possible.
Boardwalk Waffles and Ice Cream in Maplewood
We woke up bright and early to head over to Boardwalk Waffles and Ice cream- our first stop of the day! It was a super fun café with live music, arcade games, tons of unique ice cream flavors, and Belgian-style waffles. The waffle and ice cream sandwich combo was inspired by the iconic Jersey Shore boardwalks. Here's a list of some of those great boardwalks with amazing food, amusements parks, and fun by the ocean! You can see this theme throughout the café with its brightly colored walls, décor, and beach vibes!
We knew this would be a popular place on National Ice Cream for Breakfast Day, so we made sure to hurry over! They offered limited-edition waffle flavors like espresso and strawberry and had unique ice cream flavors that we could pair to our liking. An added bonus for this special day was the free coffee! As avid coffee fans, we knew we had to order the espresso waffles. It was a dark chocolate-y waffle with hints of espresso. Topped with Mackinac Island Fudge ice cream, it was a decadent chocolate breakfast experience. We also ordered the famous original waffle and paired it with strawberry ice cream to really feel the summertime boardwalk vibes. Overall, we believe it was definitely worth waking up early for!
The Fountain on Locust in Midtown
Later that day we grabbed some of our favorite cereal and headed out to the Fountain on Locust- a restaurant/ice cream bar right by campus! The Fountain was originally a car showroom, selling the Stutz Bearcat and Blackhawk until it became a restaurant in 2008! While there was ~technically~ no event going on*, they loved our dedication for Ice Cream for Breakfast Day and topped our cereal bowls with a scoop of ice cream!
The pairings included Cheerios with Butter Pecan, Cheerios with raspberry sorbet, Vanilla Blueberry Granola with strawberry swirl ice cream, and Cinnamon Toast Crunch topped with a special Churro ice cream (hands-down the best combo).
*We had seen a news article from the previous year about National Ice Cream for Breakfast Day events happening around the city, but the Fountain had changed owners since that time! The moral of the story, if you research certain freebies or events happening, but are not 100% sure they are for real, show up anyway!! In our case, the owner was excited that we had come to support their “event” and gave us some free ice cream anyway!
Other St. Louis Events
We had a great time and are crossing our fingers that both places carry on the traditions next year! We loved getting to celebrate this fun holiday today and are glad St. Louis had so many fun events to visit. Although we only made it to two celebrations this year, there were plenty of other spots around town that had events such as Clementine’s Naughty and Nice Creamery, Poptimism STL, Ice’s Plain and Fancy, and Serendipity Ice Cream. We are already counting down the days until the next National Ice Cream for Breakfast Day!
