Bloomington students and residents have a strong love for the ethnic food scene around town. Fun day or night time activities of exploring international markets and every restaurant nestled on 4th street. Yet, as Btown continues to grow so do new tasty options. You can find one of the newest Korean restaurants off of 3rd street. Hoosier Seoulmate is sure to not only attract your tastebuds but capture your heart and soul by bringing a Korean American flare to Bloomington.

I love to try new restaurants and explore interesting dishes. However, sometimes I find this to be difficult with picky family or friends that don’t find the food adventure to be all that thrilling. However, Hoosier Seoulmate has done such an awesome job at catering to both food type preferences of Korean and American classics. This family-owned and operated business is an old player in the fusion restaurant game as they have previously owned a Korean Chinese restaurant in Fort Wayne, IN. They know how to do it right, and trust me, it’s working.

Popular Dishes

You can never go wrong with classic Korean dishes. But I admire Hoosier Seoulmate’s ability to take a spin on "go-to" dishes and turn it into a fun mix of cultures. Some of the most popular items on the menu are the kimchi bulgogi fries, beef bul-dog, and bibimbap. Most of the dishes are able to be upped in the spicy game as many of the sauces are made in house. Another great part about Korean restaurants are the side dishes. If you are unfamiliar with this, most restaurants will serve you the house selection of side dishes to complement your meal. At Hoosier Seoulmate, most of the entrees come with 4 house-made dishes that change daily.

Tasty Appetizers

If you like Korean food, you are probably a big fan of two popular Korean dishes: bulgogi and kimchi. These are staples in the Korean culture. But how about both of these piled on top of french fries. Tell me that doesn’t sound like the best thing ever. The ultimate comfort food finished off with a sweet garlic sauce and spicy mayo. Perfect for sharing at the start of the meal! But I won’t judge if you prefer to order this for just yourself. They are so good that once you start eating you just won't stop.

Hoosier Specials

As if the fries weren’t already an amazing Korean American fusion, checkout their twist on the American hot dog, or as they call them, the “Bul-Dog.” Let’s be real. American hot dogs can be scary. I mean what are they actually made out of... mystery meat? The best part about these bul-dogs are the variety in meats that you can order. (Not sketchy ground up meat that is formed in a link shape, but rather fresh pieces of meat that are cooked to perfection). Try the beef, pork, chicken, or the veggie version with the egg-dog. Basically the bul-dogs are marinated meat in a bun with sauces and other fun ingredients on top. AND they are super affordable at just around $3 a dog. A nice snack, side dish, or meal (but maybe order a couple to feel the ultimate satisfaction).

The Classics

Bibimbap is a classic! Satisfying, filling, and so tasty! You can get this dish with your choice of chicken, pork, tofu, beef, or shrimp. The sizzling “Dolsot” bibimbap is so fun to order while sitting down. It lives up to its name because it arrives sizzling hot. Keep in mind that if you order the Dolsot through delivery it will come mixed together to ensure the best quality upon arrival. I personally loved the fermented red pepper paste to mix around. Aesthetically pleasing and so good.

Another Korean fav is of course bulgogi! A meat lovers' paradise. The beef bulgogi comes on a sizzlin’ hot stone. It is paired with white rice and of course the tasty side dishes. You can never go wrong with this one.

The competition amongst Korean restaurants is getting intense in Btown. Next time you are looking for a place to go, check out Hoosier Seoulmate and compare their classic and fusion dishes to your go-to dishes at the other restaurants in town. I recommend getting the full experience by ordering a classic Korean dish and one that has an American spin. Customers of all types have noted as loving the variety of options! I know you won’t be disappointed.

Korean food never gets old, especially when mixed with unique styles that Hoosier Seoulmate has to offer. They are open for dine in, carryout, or delivery Monday – Saturday 11 AM to 2:30 PM and 4:30 PM – 9 PM. They currently deliver through Door Dash but are looking to start in house delivery options.
