Austin, Texas is known for a lot of things, Mexican free-tailed bats, live music, the state capitol and last but not least... 6th Street. Known to locals as dirty sixth this historically famous street is lined with bars with cheap deals. It's a lot like the Las Vegas strip of Texas. Here are some tips to take into account on your trip to the dirty 6th street or Austin, Texas.
Do: Get a ride to and from
Drunk driving is never a good idea and since the bars are downtown parking is hard to find and expensive. Luckily there are plenty of other options such as a pedi cab, ride shares like Uber and Lyft , taxi's and even the city bus.
Do: Check out Alamo Draft House
This Austin classic has a location on sixth street. With only two screens it has a classic old Austin vibe. Here, you can get food and drinks before heading out to the bars while watching a movie. #SpoonTip Make sure to get there early to watch their vintage clips before your movie starts.
Don't: Be rude
Nobody likes to be around someone if they are being rude. If you're drunk still try to keep the positive vibes alive, so you don't ruin anyone else's experience. The bartenders are just trying to do their job, there is no point in making it harder for them.
Do: Tip your bartender
I can not stress this one enough! Although they might seem care free and like they are there to have a good time, your bartender is also there to make money. Although you may be trying to save money, there are plenty of other ways to do so.
Don't: Be a mess
There's always that person that gets too drunk. Most of us have been there but when there's large groups of people the last thing you want is to become a viral internet sensation while looking a hot mess.
Do: Hydrate
This is very easy to forget but very important. Being hungover on vacation is a no go. The last thing you want is to have only seen dirty sixth street during your stay in Austin. Bartenders are more than happy to pour you a glass of water but most of the time there are places to hydrate on the side of the bar, so make sure to keep an eye out.
Don't: Forget to check out everything else Austin has to offer
With a growing food scene there are plenty of cool restaurants to check out. If you are here for SXSW make sure to check out all the hidden venues in the city. There are also tons of cool bars to check out, like Rainey street and West Sixth street has more of a club atmosphere.
Do: Have Fun
Austin is a unique city filled with so many things to do. Depending on the time of year there may be a music festival going on so make sure to do your research before you begin your adventure. Enjoy your time and remember to keep Austin weird.
