First thing's first, what's a bronut? Bronuts are the delicious combination between a chocolatey brownie and a donut. To the people who came up with the brookie, it was a genius idea to melt a brownie and a cookie together.

But since I have a strong affinity for donuts, I wanted to see if I could break a barrier on my own. On top of all of that, Firework Oreos took the world by storm this month. Milk's favorite cookie now comes with a surprise pop in every bite.

So let's think for a second... Brownies + Firework Oreos + my affinity for donuts = Firework Oreo Bronuts?

Oh, this is the beginning of a beautiful relationship. 

I had to think carefully about this execution. Since brownies have a thick, stick-to-your-ribs consistency, I had to make sure that they wouldn't stick in the donut pan and fall apart. My Spoon tip for this is to make sure you spray your donut pan with Baker's Joy - not PAM. Why you may ask? Aren't they the same thing?

Negative. 

Baker's Joy contains flour, which helps when taking the bronuts out of the pan. This will allow your little bros to pop right out with no oily residue. When I first tested the recipe, I used PAM and found that my bronuts had a greasy and crunchy layer on the side that was in the donut mold.

It just didn't seem like the right texture for a bronut! Bronuts should be thick, strong, and addicting... much like real life bros. 

So now you're probably thinking, "Rachel, there are Pop Rocks in this recipe. Won't the Pop Rocks explode in the oven?!"

Surprisingly they didn't. For this recipe, I used chocolate-covered Pop Rocks, found here and crushed Firework Oreos that contained some Pop Rocks. And since Pop Rocks are a sugar-based candy they did wind up melting in the oven, making the bronuts that much more chocolatey!

In order to really pack a pop in the bronuts, I glazed the donuts with a vanilla glaze and doused them in more chocolate Pop Rocks. And badda-bing, badda-boom, your first bite of a bronut will be chocolate-y and give you a little action on your tongue! 

Firework Oreo Bronuts

    Ingredients

  • 1 package Firework Oreos
  • 1 package brownie mix
  • 1/4 cup water
  • 2/3 cup vegetable oil
  • 2 eggs
  • 2 bags Pop Rocks
  • 2 donut baking pans
  • 2 cups powdered sugar
  • 1 cup milk
  • 2 tablespoons vanilla extract

  • Step 1

    Prepare your brownie mix as directed on the box. Add your crushed Oreos and the first bag of Pop Rocks. Mix it all up and pour into your donut baking molds. Bake for 15 minutes on 350°F.

    To make the vanilla glaze, mix the milk, 2 tablespoons vanilla, and powdered sugar in a bowl (feel free to add more sugar or milk to get the right consistency). For a nice thin-to-drizzle glaze, use a 2:1 ratio of sugar to milk. If you're looking for a glaze to coat the entire donut, add the sugar in 1/2 cup increments.

    Once your lil bros are out of the oven, allow them to cool for 25 - 30 minutes. This ensures that they will be easily removed from the pan and cool enough to dip or drizzle your glaze over. Once your bronuts are covered in glaze, pour your second bag of Pop Rocks over the donuts. Next, eat'em up!!
